Glacier Express

Another highlight of our trip was to be The Glacier Express in Switzerland and it certainly did not disappoint.  The brilliant weather helped.

This panoramic trip goes from St Moritz over 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels before arriving at Zermatt at the foot of the Matterhorn. We joined the Glacier Express at Chur and had just over 6 hours before arriving at Zermatt where we stayed the night before heading back to Chur again on the Glacier Express.

We had wonderful views of idyllic mountain ranges, remote valleys, sheer rock faces, and through the deep Rhine Gorge. We reached the highpoint of 2033 meters at Oberalppass. Thanks to the large panoramic windows we had a clear view of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

We were fortunate to have two lovely couples beside us on both trains, Joseph & Susan from (believe it or not) Glen Waverley, Victoria, heading to Zermatt and Chirag & Archa from India on the return trip.

I hope you enjoy the selection of photos on this page.  Fortunately the Matterhorn was clearly visible above Zermatt as we headed into the town center early morning.

Hi Wendy & Col. Yes, all going well here and will be very sad to leave tomorrow. Train strike on Friday in Italy could be interesting but hopefully some trains will be running and currently looks like ours will be OK. Love Col & Gin.

  6. WOW
Lovely looking at all the snow and ice from my warm home, feels like she and me are with you; however, She was allergic to cold, I was always happy to cuddle for warmth.
I would absolutely panic if faced with itinerary problems like a train strike
    Continue to enjoy.
