Budapest

A beautiful city with a very confronting history of opression, pain, suffering and death over many years of wars and occupation only ending in 1989 when the Russian Red Army left.

Following are just a few photos from this amazing city

Just near our AirBnB in the old Jewish neighbourhood

Inside the Budapest Jewish synagogue.

Mass graves of over 2000 jews who died in the ghetto during WW2

Downtown Budapest

Chain Bridge across the Danube

In Budda – Castle Hill. Here is that pest again

Shoes beside the Danube in memory of those shot into the Danube by Arrow Cross militiamen in 1944-45

Interesting land / river tour

Saint Stephen’s Cathedral

Sunday service inside Saint Stephen’s Cathedral.

The Central Market Hall

Pay turnstyles at Central Market Hall toilets.  Puts a new light on the outdated phrase ‘spend a penny’.  More like 1€ (one euro)

Tranquil now – but the scene of 74 deaths when the Hungarian Police opened fire on protesters in 1956.

“Mmmmm….. I think you need to add a bit more colour to the painting”

Leaving Budapest on our boat.

Hmm. More churches I didn’t get into. Must have been rezlly naughty at some stage of my life.
Can’t you just feel the oppression and dark history they have suffered? And the pride in what they are achieving now.

Great photos and brings back memories of past trips.
Budapest is a city of contrasts and a lovely one at that, but with emotive reminders of it’s sad and turbulent past.
    Thanks Col and Ginny xx
