LAKES DISTRICT – SUFFOLK – KENT – LONDON
The past week has seen us spend 4 days in the LAKES DISTRICT and then move on to the SUFFOLK region north of London. We then went to Tumbridge Wells in KENT before Abbey Wood in London. The weather continues to be fine if not hot much of the time. It was over 30C for a couple of days in the Lakes District. The English are all complaining. Temperatures usually average low 20s in June NOT high 20s. We are absolutely loving the camping particularly some of the farm campsites and the beautiful country towns and villages.
Here are a few photos from the past week and a bit
Our camping site high above Keswick in The Lakes District
Market Day Thursday in Keswick.
Contemplating the Derwentwaters Lake …..on a hot day.
The start of a walk in The Lakes District
Fabulous scenery looking up
Fabulous scenery looking down on the village of Grange at the southern end of Derwentwater Lake.
Sunset at 9:55pm from just outside our tent in Keswick (…….OK OK so I did zoom a bit).
At Bowness on Windermere. I rowed one of these boats with shirt off 43 years ago. Too hot on this day…..and anyway, you have to wear a life jacket now so my hairy chest would have been covered😳🙄.
Now she thinks she owns the place (in Bowness on Windermere).
Lovely camping spot at Manor Hall Farm in Edingley, Nottinghamshire near the village of Halam. The owner, Farmer Brown, has friends farming in Queenscliff.
Taking the shady shortcut (1.5 miles) into Halam.
My great great great grandfather George Henry Pask was born 1791 in Stoke-by-Clare and this is the church where he was baptised.
Stoke-by-Clare.
Laverham, Suffolk. There was a crooked man who built a crooked house ……. I wonder if it was once straight ?

The Flower Bed outside Tonbridge Castle
Having tea at Pooh Corner in Ashurst Wood in Kent. This is the store AA Milne’s Christopher Robin went to to buy sweets for Pooh Bear. It is now a cafe with a lovely garden setting on a sunny day. AA Milne used to live down the road from here on a farm and used this shop in his stories. Just stumbled across this treasure.
Big Ben having a face lift and bells out of action for a few years.
The celebration of 100 years of RAF is on Tuesday 10th July. Many aircraft on display at Horse Guard Parade Ground.
I guess they don’t fly in to the city often!
They are changing guard at Buckingham Palace……
Part of the parade..
Abbey Wood Campground where we stayed 43 years ago. Still a lovely oasis 37min by train east of London.
As you have seen on this website, we have been camping for the past 4 weeks. This has been a fantastic way to travel – no bookings necessary, go where ever we want to, no time constraints, have had sensational views from many sites ….. and best of all we have met many fantastic peaple also camping – all with a story to tell.
but just in case you are wondering what is underneath the tent cover ……
Here it is. A completely insect free cocoon with air maitresses, sleeping bags and pillows. It takes about 10 minutes to set up including the 30 seconds to inflate each airbed with small 12V electric blower.
So now the end is nigh. We fly out on Monday 9th to Singapore then home to Melbourne (and we hear cooler weather ) on Friday 13th.
Thank you for looking at our website and thank you for all the lovely comments.
See you all shortly

Thank you for publishing your wonderful photos – and your 43 yr. old story … absolutely loved the tent – the way to go – but my friends, I think if Clive and had a tent, I reckon we would still be trying to stand up many hours into the next day …. tho perhaps if we got into training now – hey we’ve got a few months to practice! What do you think?

Will certainly miss these interludes every few days; continue to be well and safe. The freedom of your camping versus “under a solid roof” is inspiring, and such a relaxed way to see off-the-beaten track areas. Well done, Ginn and Col.
Look forward to seeing you in Melbourne.
Hi Gand C, I have enjoyed all the photos, news and stories of your travels. Thanks and looking forward to seeing you both soon. Safe journey. Love, Viv xoxo
Fabulous opportunity to share this momentous trip with you through your photos (clever!) and commentary (even more clever! Same ol’ Col!). We remember many of the spots in UK and in Europe. We were in Keswick last June and loved our time there, but I wasn’t feeling well, so we did not do many hikes. Glad you met such lovely people; you will keep in touch by email and maybe visit again. Plan a trip to USA soon and stay with us or travel with us! We are coming to Australia in October of 2019! See ya!!!
